On this page are stories about how some of the songs came to be.
"Oh Ukraine, God Bless You” is our tribute to the people of Ukraine, who have experienced so much suffering these past several months. We hope and pray that they will soon be able to live in peace in their beautiful country, with its beautiful customs and traditions.
I will share a little about how this song came to be. Theresa and I were setup and ready to record several songs, both audio and video. Everything in the studio was turned on and ready to go, including cameras. We were going to start playing and singing in a few minutes, and we knew which songs we would be doing.
Right before we were going to start playing, this song came into my head, “Oh Ukraine, God Bless You.” Those simple words, and the melody that came with it, just came into my mind. Theresa already had her bass on, and was ready to start playing, when I asked her to please sing this phrase with me, and then we’ll see what happens. Theresa is used to being flexible, and changing keys and stuff at the last minute, but this clearly caught her by surprise. It caught me by surprise too, but we decided to try playing it, and see what would happen.
We put it in the key of E minor, with a simple chord progression, and then we hit record and started to play. What is on this recording and video are the first time we ever played and sang the song. We added a few more vocal tracks later to fill it out a little, but this song is basically what we played live in the studio on that day.
Some of the footage in this video is from a benefit concert we did for Ukraine, and there are also some moving images of the people of Ukraine, and their country. We hope that this song and video will be like a candle we are holding up for the people of Ukraine, in the hope that they will soon be able to live in peace, and that peace will prevail throughout the world. 🕯
